Coming this summer Apple behind the scenes announced OS X Mountian Lion, their latest upgrade to their operating system line up. Nothing to major more a unification of the iOS with OS X. “Inspired by the iPad” apple quotes they’re bringing the most commonly known features from iOS over to OS X.
So what exactly are the new features coming to OS X Mountain Lion
iMessages is now coming to the OS X environment so you can text iPhone , iPod, and iPad users from your mac. Aiming in a sense to take out IM clients apple is now baking in the famous free texting tool into a desktop/laptop environment.
Notification Center that recently was released in iOS 5 is now being brought to the OS X interface to update on latest app updates, game center notifications , emails etc. Competing now against famous software like growl notification center adds on to the list of things apple is now providing by default which may spell out trouble for 3rd party vendors.
Reminders another book from iOS the simple to-do list management app is now able to sync with a desktop client and vise versa.
Another yet simple app but also being able to sync and be used on the desktop notes will make its debut on mountain lion.
The all popular game center will now be available for OS X so you can keep track of not only your high scores and achievements but your friends as well and even compete from iPad to iPhone to mac.
Additionally new features like AirPlay Mirroring & Gatekeeper , airplay mirroring will allow users to mirror their mac onto an apple tv connected to any HDTV etc. So if you want to share a website, pictures, video etc with friends from your mac simply mirror your mac over onto your Apple TV. Gatekeeper is OS X new security/permissions app that will help in verifying apps you install, apple will now have apple certified applications (apps in application store) and alert you when your downloading from a 3rd party source.
Apple aims to unify the iOS interface with OS X now you can start things on your mac be it movies, messaging etc and pick it up on the go with your iPod, iPhone, iPad. Apple aims towards summer for release and at my guess it’ll be around a 30$ upgrade, more of incremental upgrade as we saw from leopard to snow leopard we’ll see additional bug fixes, tweaks etc and I’m sure some backend features added in.
